Your Guide to Some of Our Metal Fabrication Equipment

If you’re reading this website, you’ll already know how at Mavin Industries, we are experts in metal fabrication (steel, stainless steel, aluminium), especially transport fabrication projects involving buses, utility vehicles, trailers and the like. You’ll find a lot of relevant pics of previous jobs in our gallery.

What you may not know is why we use some of the equipment we do. So, in this blog entry, we’ll take a closer look at three modern manufacturing tools: the CNC laser cutter, the hydraulic guillotine, and the punch and shear machine. Note that all three machines require a certain amount of training and experience to operate safely and effectively.

CNC Laser Cutter is An Essential Metal Fabrication Equipment

A CNC laser cutter is an industrial tool that cuts using a laser beam. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, meaning that the laser follows a programmed path. The advantage of such heat-based cutting compared to traditional friction-based cutting is the level of precision achievable. A CNC laser cutter also leaves cleaner edges, is a lot faster than the alternative and isn’t susceptible to the same sort of wearing since it is contactless. While not relevant to our business (bespoke metal fabrication), these cutters can additionally cut wood, leather, acrylics and other materials.

Hydraulic Guillotine

Also used for our transport fabrication and many other types of work, a hydraulic guillotine is a machine for cutting metal to size cleanly and without excess waste. Said metal may be in the form of plates, sheets or rods. Like CNC laser cutters, hydraulic guillotines can be computer-programmed so that they deliver excellent accuracy and repeatability. Both of those things are obviously important in component fabrication, where you want each copy to be identical. Hydraulic guillotines are more efficient than the manual variety, as well as being able to cope with a wider range of metal thicknesses thanks to their generally superior cutting capacity. Finally, when employed correctly, they definitely contribute to a safer workplace.

Punch and Shear Machine

A punch and shear machine is a piece of metal fabrication equipment that can be used to bend, cut, punch holes in or shear a piece of metal. Having multiple functions in a single tool makes it invaluable in bespoke metal fabrication. In the long run, these machines save space, save power, save money on initial cost and save money on servicing! There are larger versions consisting of multiple stations, and they still tend to be a smarter option for many workshops than several separate machines. Punch and shear machines are relatively easy to operate, though as we noted in the introduction, not for the untrained/inexperienced.
