Your Guide to Punch and Shear Machines

As part of our custom metal fabrication processes at Mavin Industries, we use a range of different machinery. One type we haven’t covered before in a blog entry are punch and shear machines. While our focus is on supplying components and equipment to the transportation industry, these versatile devices are useful for manufacturing companies working in countless areas. So, let’s take a closer look at punch and shear machines…

What is a Punch and Shear Machine?

OK, let’s start with the basics: A punch and shear machine is a piece of industrial equipment that can be used to work metal in various ways, including bending, cutting, punching holes and shearing. For an easy-to-follow demonstration of an Aussie-made example of a punch and shear machine, check out this short video.

What are the Advantages of Punch and Shear Machines?

The first one should be pretty obvious. Having punching and shearing and other functions available in a single machine saves manufacturing firms money (on both initial investment and ongoing maintenance), factory floorspace and power. Indeed, these devices tend to be energy efficient. Another distinct advantage of punch and shear machines is that they are relatively straightforward to operate. Thirdly, modern punch and shear machines are quite safe to use by trained operators sporting the necessary safety gear.

What Safety Precautions are Required for Punch and Shear Machines?

Punch and shear machine operators are advised to employ both eye and noise protection, so their personal protective equipment (PPE) would commonly be goggles and earmuffs. Given adequate eye/ear coverings, fingers and hands are probably most at risk from the moving parts due to accidents or improper use. Operators are asked to bear this mind at all times, and are assisted in staying safe by pedal operation, emergency stop buttons, safety sensors and warning lights (depending on the make and model of punch and shear machine they have).

What are the Applications of a Punch and Shear Machine?

It would be easier to ask, “What aren’t?!” Punching and shearing are two of the most important activities in metal fabrication. Basically, any manufacturing business that needs to cut, notch, punch a hole in or bend metal could conceivably utilise a punch and shear machine in their operations. Obviously, there are limits to the size of metal pieces that a particular example can handle. At the same time, there are also bigger punch and shear machines, consisting of multiple stations. Even with larger models, punch and shear machines represent excellent value for money. A manufacturing firm would be silly to split the exact same functions among separate devices.
